Astronomical Association Corona Borealis
Corona Borealis is a Rovaniemi-based astronomical association consisting of local astronomy enthusiasts and operating in Finnish Lapland. Among our prime objectives is to inspire everyone, especially youths, to engage in the mysteries of our universe.
The association was founded in Rovaniemi in the fall of 2003 under the name Pohjan Kruunu – Corona Borealis. In 2019, the name was changed to Astronomical Association Corona Borealis. Currently, the association has around 50 members. We arrange lectures and workshops for our members and for everyone else interested in astronomy. In these events, we address astronomical issues according to the members’ wishes and the hosts’ areas of expertise. In addition, we get acquainted with observing equipment such as binoculars and telescopes, and take trips to the surrounding terrain to gaze at the amazing night sky.
We have some observation equipment that that our members can borrow when needed. As the site of observation, we have used a place called Kroopinpalo, located to the south of Rovaniemi.
Corona Borealis is Lapland’s own astronomical association that collaborates with the Helsinki-based, nationwide Ursa Astronomical Association. Our specific goal is to increase astronomical awareness among children and youths so that they get a chance to experience the wonders of the universe, to learn about nature, to expand their worldview, and to build up their character. This education is also aimed at our members and the public, and it is carried out through cooperation with schools and other operators such as Rovaniemi City Library.
The starry sky is always startling sight. When you also know what you are looking at, your startlement turns into permanent amazement that makes you endeavor to understand the universe and your part in it. This is also what makes Finnish astronomy enthusiasts leave their hearth and home in freezing cold to gaze at the wonders of space.
