I too have witnessed STRONG NLC (up to 40 degrees altitude) at the same
time as a weak auroral display(although magnetically southern folk on this
list would say it was a nice auroral display) . I did not notice the NLC
become weaker as a result of the auroral activity. I have read that some
people have seen aurora and NLC fade and brighten in opposite phase,
though I have a hard time believing that considering my observation.
However, one observation does not make a theory :).
