The only optical effect I've seen (but not in the flesh) this month was what Greenler calls a "heiligenschein streak" but might be better called an opposition effect streak.. On a bright sunny afternoon last week I took some landscape photos. While assembling them into a panorama I noticed on a field of barley stubble an odd bright diffuse line going upwards from my shadow. Only the very top of the latter was visible because I had tried to avoid getting it in the picture. That
bit of shadow also had a bright area around it. I had missed seeing an opposition effect glow! The barley stalks were hiding their own shadows at the antisolar point making it appear bright. The bright streak above the antisolar point resulted from the vertical stalks still hiding their own shadows in those directions. To the left and right they did not.

I must go back and better picture ~ but the sun has refused to shine ever since!

To all, Seasons Greetings and many halos in 2003!
