   The phenomenon could be a corona as well a halo, the effect is    similar when looking it with binoculars. I have noticed the same.    When looking a bright and colorful sun dog with binoculars    it looks not so spectacular anymore.

   The reason is something to do with optics. I guess Joe Cali    and Gary Becker have given quite good answer to this question.
