Meteorologisista kondiksista on selonteko Ripleyn ja Saugierin artikkelissa:

"One low, centered over Minnesota was moving away (.....) The Minnesota
disturbance caused a general snowfall of about 5 cm in Southern Saskatchewan
during the night of 2 December and early morning of 3 December. The snow came to
an end at Saskatoon about 0900 as the barometer rose sharply and the moderate
north-easterly wind diminished to 2-3 meters per second. By late afternoon the
rigde has passed and the presure fell rapidly for a brief period

As the Minnesota disturbance moved away its associated cirrus cloud sheet
gradually receded during the day. The temperature at screen level was
practically steady at -20 C until the late afternoon cold air advection balanced
the incoming radiation (from a total of nine "suns" at one stage!). However, by
late afternoon the declining Sun conceded the "tug-of-war" and the temperature
plummeted to -30 C in couple of hours.

There were two layers of ice crystals in the atmosphee at the time of the halo
display. The upper layer (5-10 km abouve the sea level) was cirrus cloud
associated with the receding Minnesota depression, whilst the lower layer was
composed of ice crystals formed in the lower atmosphere (0-2 km or higher) by
inrush of cold air at the surface. Which layer of ice crystals was responsible
for which optical phenomenon is a matter of conjencture. The cirrus cloud was
considerably thicker towards the south and, as a whole, thinned during the day.
The low level ice crystals were harder to observe but appeared to be present at
the ground surface until mid-afternoon with the greatest intensity around 11:00"

Elikkästä tämä vaikuttaa tällaiselta tyypilliseltä Pohjois-Amerikoissa
tapahtuvalta jutulta, jossa lumisadealueen väistyessä ilmaan jää vielä
jääkidekerros. Kosteuskerros voi tuolloin nähtävästi olla epätavallisen
extensiivinen niin vaaka kuin pystysuunnassa. Mike Hollingshead on tehnyt
asiasta hyviä huomioita http://www.extremeinstability.com/09-1-14.htm:

"The best time to see these I've learned isn't really when it is the
coldest out, but whenever you can see the sun come up right behind a
departing snow storm. The air in the northwest flow aloft behind things
is still moist enough to contain ice crystals. Seems like whenever I get
up the 2nd morning behind a system, usually the coldest, I'm
disappointed."

Saskatoon... Saskatoon... Saskatoon...

Tämä hirviömäinen näytelmä todella ansaitsee paikkansa halohistoriassa,
aivan siellä huipulla. On todellinen merkkipaalu ja kulttuuriteko saada
skannit näistä talteen ja esille. Tuolla auringon korkeudella tuollaiset
saurit... 44-sauritkin kiilamaiset... matalammalla auringolla 66:t olisivat
kenties voineet olla siellä. Tai ainakin voi unelmoida. Kerni on varmaan
