Toissapäivänä löydetty kirkas (14 magnitudia on kirkas! :) NEO asteroidi 2004 PT42 olisi havaittavissa Pegasuksessa pari päivää ennenkuin on meille liian etelässä. Asteroidi on varsin suuri (1-3 km) NEO asteroidiksi. Se liikkuu tällä hetkellä noin 11 kaarisekuntia minuutissa kohti etelää. Lähimmillään Maata se on sunnuntaina, jolloin se on 'vain' 25 miljoonan kilometrin etäisyydellä.

Oheisessa viestissä on asteroidin paikat tunnin välein lähipäiville (Huom! Kello 0 UT on 03 Suomen kesäaikaa). Rataelementit saattavat vielä hieman muuttua, joten paikat kannattaa laskea MPC:n efemeriidigeneraattorilla juuri ennen havaintorupeamaa.

             BRIGHT NEAR-EARTH ASTEROID 2004 PT42

On August 11th, the Siding Spring Survey picked up a fast-moving object about 7 degrees east of the globular cluster M15 in Pegasus. Images taken with the 0.5-meter (20-inch) Uppsala Schmidt telescope showed it to be racing southward at nearly 5 degrees per day. The survey is operated by Robert H. McNaught, Gordon Garradd, and five colleagues on Siding Spring Mountain, Australia.

Designated 2004 PT42 by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts (http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/mpc.html), this newfound object is unusually bright for a near-Earth asteroid -- magnitude 14 -- and it will remain this bright for the next 10 days. That makes it an inviting target for any 6-inch or larger telescope equipped with a CCD camera.

According to the orbit calculated by Timothy B. Spahr of the Minor Planet Center, 2004 PT42 reaches perihelion (its near point to the Sun) on August 15th, when it is 0.17 astronomical unit (25 million kilometers) from Earth. Since its orbit never takes it inside that of Earth, this is an Amor-type minor planet. It poses no risk of collision with Earth in the foreseeable future, which is nice to know because, judging by its current brightness, it is a body some 1 to 3 km (roughly 1 mile) in diameter.

The hourly ephemeris below is from the Minor Planet Center's Ephemeris Service. Along with the asteroid's right ascension and declination (equinox 2000.0) at the start of each hour of Universal Time, it gives the distance from Earth (Delta) and the Sun (r) in astronomical units and the expected visual magnitude (similar to that of Pluto). Note: If the numbers in the table don't line up for you, switch to a fixed-space font like Courier.

These positions are geocentric. Keep in mind that parallax could shift the asteroid's track against the star background by a sizable fraction of 1 arcminute as seen from a given geographic location.
