These two pictures were taken when we went aurora-hunting for the first time.
These auroras are from Orivesi, Finland.
All photos in this page were taken with our then
brand-new Canon Powershot G2.

During the spring 2002 the naked-eye comet Ikeya-Zhang was in the sky.
It is also visible in this picture as a dusty dot in the middle of
the northern lights.
![]() These images were taken at our friends' summer cottage in Ikaalinen, Finland. 7.-8.9.2002
This autumn night the sky was all green. In the beginning one could see
a fading patch of red too. This evening's photos were taken somewhere between
Orivesi and Kangasala.
In spite of the normal darkness, we could nearly read below these green
auroras. The dance of light continued to the morning hours.
This aurora corona was moving all the time and showed us some very beautiful
forms.
In the late morning hours the colour changed surprisingly.
Reminds us of a Babylon 5 shadow ship.
11.9.2002
These are the fading remains of a very short aurora show in Orivesi, Finland.
This is our first experiment with aurora videos. The video consists
of 15 pictures and is strongly compressed.
1.-2.10.2002Before the best parts of the show we photographed this video that consists of over 200 still pictures. The pictures were taken every 30 seconds. The flying object in the video is a plane. 1.10.2002 Northern lights video [AVI] [MOV]
This is the most spectacular aurora show we've ever seen. These auroras
shined like neon lights.
I must remind you dear readers that we don't use any post-processing or
color forgeries in our images. This is how it really looked like!
Some of the first pictures were taken at the observatory of the local
astronomical association
Tampereen Ursa.
We named this bright sea of auroras "The Total Balalaika Show".
At this time it was the light of the city pollution that was overrun by
a natural phenomenon.
At 1 am we moved ourselves to the shore of lake Särkijärvi in Hervanta,
Tampere.
At Särkijärvi we found a Spanish guy standing in the shore bushes. He was
thrilled to see northern lights for the second time in his life.
He seemed to be a tough guy and stayed there when we headed for home at
3.30 am.
3.10.2002
After 24 hours I (Emma) was lucky to see yet another stunningly bright
aurora show from the local observatory.
Ongoing icy winds disturbed my photography by trying to knock down the
camera mount.
This snake of northern lights was so bright that I could see its light
reflecting from the surface of the nearby lake.
