Pollen coronas

2009

31.5. and 1.6. provided a nice pollen corona display in Pirkanmaa area of southern Finland. All the surfaces outside were covered with yellow pine pollen and the pollen particles could be seen floating in the air.

The pine pollen corona remained around the Sun the whole evening. The outer layers disapeared in the colorful sunset. Camera: Canon EOS 5D II + EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO

2007

The beginning of June 2007 was the warmest in years. Water in the local lakes was getting warmer and the pines were full of pollen. The local schools had just closed for the summer and the beach of Särkijärvi was crowded with young people including a young pair. The maiden had decided to leave the winter time behing (a finnish tradition) by swimming in the lake. Her spouse was less determined and seemed to be uncertain of the temperature of the water. Finally he was talked over and both of them stepped into the water under the pollen corona.
Another photo of the pair.

The picture was nominated as the best picture in the Tähdet ja Avaruus -magazine's summer contest for astronomical and atmospheric observations.

2006

While visiting the hard rock festival Sauna Open Air in Tampere, I noticed a pollen corona around the shining sun. The new Eurovision song contest -winner Lordi was playing at the time, so we took another picture in Lordi-spirit :-)

[Halo] This image contains a pollen colour circle - a rather rare thing in eclipse photos.

The same pollen circle is also visible in Pasi Ojala's video camera captures of the solar eclipse
