Astronomie hat eine lange Tradition in Kajaani. Von 1935 bis 1936 bestand schon der Verein Kajaanin Ursa. Der astronomische Verein Kajaanin Planeetta wurde im Jahre 1987 gegründet. Die Ziele des Vereins sind: Astronomie für Amateure zu fördern und unterstützen, Sternforschung als Hobby zu betreiben, Veranstaltungen, Vorträge und Sternbeobachtungen zu organisieren, und als Bindeglied zwischen Hobbyastronomen zu funktionieren. Im Laufe der Jahre haben unterschiedliche Veranstaltungen mit zahlreichen Teilnehmern stattgefunden.
Das Observatorium / Die Sternwarte
Das Observatorium von Kajaanin Planeetta befindet sich auf dem Wasserturm im Stadtteil Lehtikangas. Im Jahre 1990 wurde die Sternwarte von der Stadt Kajaani fertiggestellt. Die Spitze des Wasserturms befindet sich 213 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und 35 Meter über der Erdoberfläche. Neben dem Observatorium wurden auch Räumlichkeiten für Besprechungen und Vorträge in die Spitze des Turmes eingebaut. Der Verein trifft sich dienstags und donnerstags entsprechend dem Veranstaltungskalender.

Astronomy a hobby has a long tradition in Kajaani. First know astronomy society was founded 1935-1936 with name Ursa of Kajaani. The current society was founded in 1987 with name Kajaani Planet. The society's objectives are: to promote and support hobbies, recreational activities and interests related to astronomy. We also arrange meetings, lectures and meetings related to the events in the sky. Over the years our gatherings for various events have collected large numbers participants.
Observatory
Observatory of the Kajaani Planet is located on the top of the Lehtikangas water tower. Construction of the observatory was commissioned by the town of Kajaani in 1990. Top of the water tower is located 213 meters from the sea level and 35 meters above the ground. In addition to the observatory tower, the tower also includes our small lecture and meeting room. In these premises the society meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays based on the activities listed on our calendar.

Iltojen jälleen pimetessä meteori- ja tulipallohavainnot taivaalta lisääntyvät.
