In wintertime you can see often bright and colorful halo in   diamond dust (ice crystals on the air near the ground level).   I my mind those more beautiful than ordinary halos in high   level clouds. I have seen many photostaken in Alaska by   Walt Tape and my Finnish friends who visited there in the   last January.

Those diamond dust halos are privileges of northern (or   very southern) latitudes. Just a month ago three Finnish   observer, Marko Riikonen, Jukka Ruoskanen and Jarmo Moilanen,   left to Oymyakon in Eastern Siberia for several months to   study halos in extreme cold temperatures. It would very   interesting to see, which kind of results they will get.
