SOME OF THE FHON'S BEST DISPLAYS OF THE YEAR 1995

8. Apr. -95
First major display of the spring -95. Observed in southern part of Finland.
Nice display with supra- and infralateral arcs included one jewel: 9 deg tangent arcs. Only Jani Katava saw those by naked eye. From slides it
was found from Veikko Makela, Marko Pekkola, Marko Riikonen and Mika Sillanpaa
in Helsinki and Ismo Luukkonen in Turku and Jukka Ruoskanen in Gylto.

28. Apr. -95
In Oulunsalo Jarmo Moilanen photographed bright parhelion in a hurry. Later when
he studied photos he found 9, 18, 20 and 23 deg halos from those slides. Later
on the same day Jarmo stopped in Pattijoki and saw an elliptical halo.

25. May -95
Great odd radius display In Espoo observed by Mika Sillanpaa. He saw 9, 18, 20
and 23 deg halos with 18deg lateral arcs and 23 deg parroid. Display stayed on
the sky more than one and a half hour. In Helsinki, just a half hour drive away,
group of observers got only some glimpse of that. Anne Jokinen got 9 and 23 deg
halos with 18 deg lateral arcs and 23 deg parroid. Veikko Makela got the same
set but without 18 deg lateral arcs. 23 deg parroid was observed by Jere Kahanpaa, Jani Katava and Marko Riikonen in Helsinki and by Eero Savolainen in
Kuusankoski. 9 deg halo was found from Riikonen's slides afterwards.

26. May -95
Good column display this time in Oulunsalo observed by Jarmo Moilanen. The sky
around sun was not so brilliant but there was faint Parry arc and good infralateral arcs. 120 deg parhelion was seen alongside a faint parhelic cirlce.
But most striking haloform in the sky was Greenler anthelic arcs which took the
shape of big upside down V opposite to sun. Photographs showed that it had faintly extended above the parhelic circle. In Savukoski Simo Aikioniemi observed Greenler anthelic arcs as strong anthelion on the parhelic circle.

28. May -95
Attacks of pyramidal ice crystals continued. Poorly oriented pyramidal crystals
produced an upper part of a 23 deg halo in Degerby. This halo was observed by
Jukka Ruoskanen and Marko Riikonen. Same halo was in Helsinki saw by Jani katava,
Johanna Pekkola and Marko Pekkola. Marko Toivonen observed an 18 deg halo in
Kuusankoski and a 120 deg parhelion was observed in the same city by Eero Savolainen. Reima Eresmaa in Jyvaskyla observed both 9 deg halo and 120 deg
parhelion. In Imatra Veikko Makela witnessed the days best display, which included 9 and 23 deg halo and 18 deg lateral arcs and 23 deg parroid.

28. Jun. -95
Complex halodisplay in Oulunsalo observed by Jarmo Moilanen. Several rare haloforms was in the sky. infralateral arc, Parry arc, 120 deg parhelia, 120 deg parhelic arc, Wegener anthelic arc, Greenler anthelic arcs as an anthelion, faint Tricker anthelic arc and colored Liljequist parhelia was dokumented with photographs.

  1. Jul. -95 In souther Finland 23 deg parroid was observed by Marko Riikonen and Eero Savolainen. One of the best display of the summer was spotted in Juva by Jari Piikki. Fine display included Parry arc, infralateral arc and Lowitz arcs. All three component (upper, lower and circular) of Lowitz arcs was psesent near parhelia.
  2. Jul. -95 In Siuntio Jukka Ruoskanen ran from train to home to get camera because in the sky 9 and 24 deg halos was visible.
  3. Sep. -95 Very strong and brilliant halodisplay in Savukoski observed by Simo Aikioniemi. Brighness of circumzenithal arc makes observer to wrote that "it doesn't make any sence". Display included also Greenler and Tricker anthelic arcs.
  4. Nov. -95 In temperature of -18C a very strong diamond dust display in Oulunsalo reported by Jarmo Moilanen. This is perhaps one of the best low level displays recorded in Finland. Strong upper tangent arc with supra- and infralateral arcs (faintly in front of ground!) and Greenler anthelic arcs. Also upper 9 deg parroid was observed as a sparkling in the sky.
